STRATEGIES TO ADDRESS NEURODIVERGENT STUDENTS DURING REMOTE LEARNING
INTRODUCTION:
The students who suffered the most during remote learning are the neurodivergent people. Neurodivergent people are a different kind of people whose brain functions differently from others. These people include students of Autism and Hyperactivity. Each students have their their own needs. So they must be taught based on their needs. The teaching must be done according to the pace of the students.
PROBLEMS FACED BY STUDENTS:
These students must be taken special care by teachers in learning. But during online classes teachers were unable to take special care. Neurodivergent students can be taught to their fullest only when they are taught in a group along with their friends, which was not possible during the pandemic. During remote learning they are not able to be fully attentive. Teachers must be in regular touch with the students and must know their mental health. But as this is not possible often, teachers had to go to the individuals house twice or thrice every week. This creates difficulty among parents as they had to sit with their children everyday to take care of their mental health.Even their enthusiasm and interest will be gone if they are learning alone during remote learning .
STRATEGIES TO ADDRESS:
These students learning must be appealed to their senses. Audio learner’s must be shown audio tapes and book while visual learner’s must be shown colourful pictures and videos. There must be increase in breaks among classes to refresh the students. The learning must be broken or splitted into different parts for more easier learning for them. Their lessons must be different everyday which prevents them from getting bored. Theme identification is also an important way as by this, they relate lessons to their daily life activities which they will never forget. They must be taught based on the individual’s skill and capacity. Parents must be in regular touch with teachers and must report the students condition to them. Sometimes students can also be called to school once or twice a month to change their monotonous way of studying.
CONCLUSION:
By following these methods we can maximise the learning outcome of neurodivergent students during remote learning. They must not be denied their opportunity to learn and must be given equal rights to learn. By this we can also improve the standard of literacy in our country. Everyone in our country has the right to learn which can be accomplished by the help of these measures.
